Editorial Assistance For Post-Graduate Admissions

Creating A Dynamic Impression

Entrance to many post-graduate programs can be a highly competitive process. It is also in itself a very creative process and I believe that candidates can use the admissions process to their advantage. My experience working with successful candidates has been focussed on:

• helping the individual define carefully and clearly why he or she wants to enroll in the particular post-graduate program they have chosen;

• analyzing and defining the particular faculty's priorities and the preferred attributes, qualities, and skills it is looking for in a candidate for admission;

• using language effectively to communicate (primarily in the required personal statement) a dynamic persona, thus creating a positive and lasting impression in the minds of the members of the Admissions Committee.

When working with potential candidates, I use my extensive professional experience in both the academic and writing-editing worlds to help them recognize the skills they have that are especially relevant to the faculty program to which they are applying, and to formulate a personal concept that expresses verbally — but most importantly in writing — their individual skills, attributes, and qualities.

The Process

A typical scenario is a candidate applying to Law school. In my experience such individuals usually make applications to three different schools, all of which have similar but slightly different admission requirements, especially as regards the personal statement.

In an initial, rather lengthy session, the client and I examine carefully the admission requirements and procedures. We also discuss in depth and at considerable length his or her academic background, personal goals and strengths, and together we formulate an overall approach to the admissions process.

I then help the candidate build the framework of the personal statement (or other required procedures such as interviews) by identifying concepts, themes, academic and personal life experiences, and effective language that are especially relevant to the individual and that will appeal to the Admissions Committee.

The candidate then writes the personal statements, which I edit. An important part of the editing process is also a further definition of and affirmation of the strengths of the candidate.
